We are aware that local residents have raised questions regarding the current Cambridge Water works and temporary road closure on Broadway.
The works are being undertaken by Cambridge Water to install new water infrastructure required to support the delivery of the High Bourn new community and associated infrastructure improvements in the area. As part of these works, Broadway is temporarily closed between 17 and 30 August.
We recognise that the closure has caused concern for some residents and that there has been limited advance notice. This update explains why the works are taking place and how they relate to the wider delivery of High Bourn.
Why are the works needed?
The works will install new water infrastructure that forms part of the utility network required to support High Bourn and provide water services for the new community. Cambridge Water is undertaking the works in its role as the statutory water provider.
Because the work requires excavation within the highway, a temporary road closure has been approved by the Highway Authority. The traffic management arrangements were agreed between Cambridge Water and the Highway Authority to enable the works to be carried out safely and efficiently.
How long will the closure last?
We have been advised that the works are expected to be completed by 30 August 2026. Whilst the closure will inevitably cause some temporary disruption, the works are necessary to deliver essential infrastructure and represent a relatively short period of activity.
Why was there limited notice?
We appreciate that some residents have expressed frustration regarding the notice provided ahead of the works. The closure arrangements were agreed through the relevant statutory and highway processes and, like many utility works, the timing and delivery of these activities is not always within the control of the High Bourn project team.
We are committed to keeping local communities informed wherever possible and will continue to work closely with utility providers, highway authorities and other delivery partners to seek advance information on future works and communicate updates at the earliest opportunity.
Supporting the delivery of High Bourn
Utility infrastructure is a necessary part of bringing forward a new community. Before homes, schools, community facilities and other supporting infrastructure can be delivered, essential services such as water, electricity and telecommunications networks need to be installed.
The Broadway works form part of that wider programme of infrastructure delivery and will help support the future development of High Bourn and related infrastructure in the area, including the Cambourne to Cambridge (CtoC) busway.
